Telecom Gratings
High-Efficiency Diffraction Gratings for Optical Telecommunications
Modern optical telecommunications systems rely on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) to transmit vast amounts of data through a single optical fiber. Diffraction gratings are a key enabling component in these systems because they separate and manipulate individual wavelengths of light, allowing channels to be multiplexed, demultiplexed, or spectrally analyzed.
Spectrum Scientific manufactures high-precision telecom diffraction gratings optimized for near-infrared wavelengths used in fiber-optic communications, including the O-, C-, and L-bands. These gratings are designed to provide high diffraction efficiency, low polarization dependent loss (PDL), and excellent grating-to-grating repeatability, making them suitable for demanding OEM telecom applications.
Telecommunications optics frequently operate with linearly polarized light, and grating performance depends strongly on polarization state.
Two orthogonal polarization states are typically defined:
- S-polarization (TE) – electric field perpendicular to the plane of incidence
- P-polarization (TM) – electric field parallel to the plane of incidence
SSI telecom gratings are generally optimized for S-polarization, enabling high diffraction efficiency in common telecom optical configurations while minimizing polarization-dependent loss.
All of our telecom gratings are provided with a high reflectivity gold coating optimized for the NIR.
SSI telecom diffraction gratings are used in a variety of fiber-optic communication systems, including:
- DWDM and CWDM multiplexers
- Optical channel monitors
- Optical spectrum analyzers
- Telecom test instrumentation
- Fiber sensing and metrology systems
Spectrum Scientific offers a range of standard gratings, however, if we do not have a grating that meets your requirement we can manufacture bespoke gratings for volume or OEM manufacturing.
